, Matthew 16:5-12 The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
The challenge with reading the Bible in bits and pieces is that its easy to lose sight of the progression of the story. Imagine if you watched a movie, any movie, in five-minute snippets every day; or if you watched random five-minute clips every once in a while – you would never know what was going on.
In today’s reading, Jesus is warning against following the teachings of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, but this wasn’t an off-hand comment, it followed a series of interactions with them. They wanted signs, they were constantly looking to catch Jesus in a trap and they were legalists.
Their teachings can grow, just the slightest bit can get in and feed off fear, anxiety and insecurity. Just like the Kingdom of God is like yeast, so are false teachings. Don’t nurture it.
What are some legalisms and areas of doubt that you have fed over time? Are there leaders whose teachings you’ve followed that perhaps you shouldn’t have?
