Matthew 5:33-38 Concerning Oaths

Matthew 5:33-38 Concerning Oaths

But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ (NKJV)

There are people who are legalistic on this matter and will not sign oaths. Perhaps if 2,000 years of Christendom had led people to trust us, we wouldn’t need to sign contracts, but the fact is, even Christians withdraw their yesses and noes.

If we can’t be faithful in keeping an RSVP, how can we possibly be trusted to pay back a mortgage?

It seems that those who are called to be salt and light do not have a good track record on keeping their word, and that reflects poorly on other disciples and the One whose image we are called to bear.

…let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’

And note that ‘maybe’ is not an option.

When was the last time you failed to follow through on a commitment?
